Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws inspiration from an Informal aesthetic. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
While the final result of Natalina Torelli's works can be described as Informal, we are dealing with a painter closely tied to the sensory realm. Indeed, Natalina Torelli's starting point in developing her paintings is Nature itself. She focuses on details of dense vegetation and seeks to capture its true essence, transferring it to the canvas. Natalina Torelli's approach somehow equates it with the exponents of the "Last Naturalism" movement, who enlarged plant elements macroscopically, thus arriving at Informal art. Our painter shifts this discourse to sculptural natural elements, which gives her the opportunity to experiment, on the surface of the canvas, with a coloristic application based on pictorial layers. And it is precisely in these overlapping layers of paint that Natalina Torelli's art finds its greatest expression, in an ostentatious gesture that shapes the paintings as if they were actual sculptural concretions of plants. Furthermore, the painter's technique helps to increase the plastic effect through a perfect distribution of light and shadows on the subject.
Natalina Torelli is an artist who has developed a fascinating art form that blends landscape and informal art. The painter begins with a vision of a lush, dense nature to enhance its plastic aspects in a composition that no longer has any spatial or realistic references.
