Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The "seascape" in particular is a recurring theme among artists. First, for the lyricism implicit in views overlooking the sea or in romantic images of small harbors. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to give free rein to their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations.
The work reveals a certain expressionist tendency in the artist Tremate's depiction of the landscape. The seascape is subjected to a rather evident process of synthesis. The composition is schematic, built on a few lines that divide the space into bands of color. The elements of the view are rendered with a few brushstrokes that reduce everything to the essential. But what the landscape's execution loses in naturalistic rendering of sensory details, it gains enormously in expressiveness. Indeed, the use of a rather diluted technique, spreading an almost immaterial color, infuses the work with an expressive force that derives from a direct connection between the artist's perception and his pictorial gesture. In keeping with the expressionist nature of the representation, the colors also transcend the naturalistic, taking on an emotional and spiritual significance.
Tremante is an artist who has focused primarily on landscapes, particularly the sea. His language, which tends toward expressionism, leverages the potential of a synthetic application of color.
