Ugo Rassatti - Testimonies from the Past

The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," which means to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images.

Artist Ugo Rassatti has developed, in his artistic research, an original and highly recognizable style. His perception of reality leads him to a brutal reduction of objects, which he constructs with a deliberately crude and instinctive touch, marked by a provocative childishness. The most interesting aspect of Rassatti's work, however, is that this brutalism, paradoxically, always appears elegant and graceful. His style is calligraphic, almost decorative, and through it the artist constructs fragile edifices that contain a world of bizarre and colorful creatures. Ultimately, what emerges is a sense of playful lightness, a new approach to Art Brut, transfigured by fantasy.

Ugo Rassatti was an artist from Latisana, born in 1937 and who passed away in 2020. For decades, he pursued an intense artistic career that led him to play a prominent role in contemporary painting. He participated in the most important national competitions, achieving repeated success: the Agazzi Prize in Mapello, the Sacchi Prize in Villasanta, the Soliera Biennial, the Osio di Sotto Biennial, the GB Cromer Prize in Agna, the Segantini Prize in Arco, the Civitella della Chiana Biennial, the Margherita d'Argento Prize in Cesena, and the Marina Prize in Ravenna. He also received several awards at the FighilleArte Prize, where in 2011 he received the "San Michele d'Oro - Artist of the Year" award.
