Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the representation of an aspect of daily life that, apparently, has no significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The 19th century also saw the beginning of an interest in the lives of peoples and cultures other than Western art. Exoticism developed especially during the Post-Impressionist period and was a fundamental component in the birth of the historical avant-garde.
This famous silkscreen is a vivid illustration of one aspect of painter Ugo Attardi's style. Alongside a warm, color-driven expressionism, the artist also combines a type of work that emphasizes the exaltation of plasticity, as in this case. Notice how the composition centers on the figure of the woman, full, with her heavy, rounded form. This figure almost becomes a gravitational center around which the environment seems to interact. The surrounding space, in fact, is articulated according to multiple directions and different perspective lines, in an approach reminiscent of Cubist art.
Ugo Attardi, born in Sori in 1923 and died in Rome in 2006, was a painter and sculptor. After beginning his career as an abstract artist, joining the Forma 1 group, in the 1950s he turned to Expressionism, drawing inspiration from Bacon and Grosz. He participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadrennial and exhibited his work in numerous solo and group shows in Italy and abroad.
