Description of the work
Description of the work
The work presents a highly symbolic scene: in the center, Pope John Paul II, kneeling in yellow-gold liturgical vestments, performs the rite of washing the feet, facing a seated male figure in a gesture of profound Christian humility. In the background stands a cross with a crucified body rendered with slender, synthetic forms, clearly recalling the figure of Christ. The whole is immersed in a delicate palette of dusty, muted tones, creating a suspended, meditative atmosphere. The use of color is never descriptive, but suggests emotions, reflections, and values: spirituality, piety, and service as a form of universal humanity. The style of the work is typical of Ugo Attardi's mature period: balanced, essential, with a strong focus on the meaning of the gesture and the emotion it conveys. The figures are constructed with confident strokes, never strictly realistic, but always expressive. The contours are clear, while the colors, applied in overlapping strokes, create depth and atmosphere. There is no pursuit of fine detail, but rather a visual synthesis that focuses on the essence. The scene seems suspended in time, bathed in a soft light that reinforces the sense of silence and contemplation. Ugo Attardi (Sori, 1923 – Rome, 2006) was a central figure in the post-World War II Italian art scene. Founder of the Forma 1 group in 1947, along with artists such as Dorazio, Accardi, Consagra, and Turcato, he combined a striving for abstraction with a strong figurative and existential component. A painter, sculptor, and writer, Attardi always sought to express, through the human body and the symbols of history and religion, a profound sense of human experience. His works are present in important public and private collections, including the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea in Gibellina, and the MoMA in New York. He exhibited internationally: he represented Italy at the Venice Biennale, exhibited at the Rome Quadriennale, and numerous solo exhibitions of his work have been held in museums and galleries in Europe, the United States, and South America.
