Description of the work
Description of the work
The Annunciation is a popular subject in Western art history. Recounted in the Gospel of Luke, it refers to the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. The main protagonists are, of course, the Virgin Mary and the Archangel Gabriel, the bearer of the Annunciation. The episode is set in Mary's home. There are several variations on the main iconography. The Holy Spirit often appears in the form of a dove, or, more rarely, God the Father. In some representations, only the Virgin Mary appears, more rarely the angel, as in this work by Ugo Nespolo.
In this work, as in his easel works, Ugo Nespolo maintains his distinctive style, based on a Cubist-inspired geometric decomposition with a Pop flair. Unlike paintings, this decomposition does not construct space; rather, being a sculpture, it focuses entirely on the subject, thus acquiring a heightened aesthetic value. The image thus recalls the features of a mosaic or a Gothic stained-glass window, which are well-suited to the iconography of the angel, inspired by Fra Angelico's Annunciation of Cortona.
Ugo Nespolo was born in Mosso in 1921. His artistic career in the 1960s was characterized by a distinct Pop leaning. He was also involved in conceptual movements, particularly Arte Povera. His entire artistic output is characterized by a taste for irony and fun. His most famous works present an objective reconstruction of reality through complex interplays of planes and colors.
