Description of the work
Description of the work
In Turin, he earned his diploma at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts, and later earned a degree in Modern Literature, demonstrating a strong interest in art and semiology. He debuted on the Italian art scene in the 1960s, influenced by Pop Art and closely associated with Conceptual and Arte Povera artists. His work quickly became characterized by a strong transgressive, ironic tone and an apparent sense of fun, qualities that would lend themselves to the "cinematic canvas," and he soon explored this medium as well in the 1970s. In 1973, he was admitted to the Volterra psychiatric hospital; with the help of the patients, he created two works: a pyramid filled with drawings, puppets, and the patients' personal objects, and a giant papier-mâché pill, symbolizing drug treatments. In a purifying gesture intended to denounce the abuse of drug therapy and raise awareness among the public, the pill was burned in a city square. The 1980s marked the culmination of his most celebrated American career ; his paintings depict objects and commonplaces in American cities. He collaborated with RAI, creating video themes and advertising campaigns. True to the avant-garde's guiding principle of "bringing art into life," artists must occupy spaces of everyday life, transcending assigned, canonical spaces. In the 1990s, alongside his numerous other activities, he also worked in the theater, designing sets and costumes for Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore at the Rome Opera, the Paris Opera, Lausanne, Liège, and Metz. In 1991, Nespolo designed the palio for the Giostra della Quintana in Foligno, the prestigious historical chivalric reenactment dating back to 1613, which is held annually in the Umbrian city in June (challenge) and September (rematch). In 1998, commissioned by the mayors of Ascoli Piceno and San Benedetto del Tronto, he created the Palio for the August edition of the renowned Quintana tournament in Ascoli Piceno. Nespolo is also considered one of the "masters of the Palio" for having painted the two sendalli for that edition of the Palio di Asti in 2000. The turn of the century marked a fundamental milestone for the artist, long desired and sought after: the creation of " his " atelier (built himself inside an abandoned factory in his native Turin). Like a precious treasure chest, it envelops and contains his creations, his "technological toys," and his dearest belongings. The organizers of the Giro d'Italia entrusted him with the creation of the pink jersey for the 2003 edition. In 2005, he created thematic works for GTT in the Turin Metro stations and later decorated the exterior of the Via Livorno shopping center with his unmistakable signature. In 2007, he painted the banner for the Palio di Siena on August 16th and designed the sets and costumes for the opera Madama Butterfly, which opened the 53rd season of the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago Puccini on July 20th. In 2008, he created "Nespolo reads Dante," a limited-edition triptych commissioned by De Agostini of Novara, for a reading of the Divine Comedy through figurative art. That same year, a solo exhibition was held in New York by the Walter Wickiser Gallery. The Cinema Museum in Turin hosted a retrospective of his work. At the invitation of the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, he participated with two works in the exhibition "Italics: Italian Art between Tradition and Revolution, 1968-2008." In 2009, the Museo del Territorio Biella hosted the retrospective exhibition "Nespolo, Return Home," a prestigious recognition bestowed upon him in his native land. The Galleria Canci in Lerici held a solo exhibition. The Municipality of Foligno and the Ente Autonomo Giostra della Quintana commissioned him to create the "Palio della Rivincita" for the Giostra on September 13, 2009, the culminating event of the commemorative events of the 17th-century event. In June, for the 76th edition of Pitti Immagine Uomo in Florence, the Brooksfield brand chose Ugo Nespolo's bold color palette for a two-year project that would see the artist contribute stylistic influence to its collections and communications. On October 8th, the Bargello National Museum in Florence inaugurated "Novantiqua," a solo exhibition of the artist's work in the rooms once occupied by the great Renaissance narrators, and will run until January 17th, 2010. From December 19th, 2009, to April 5th, 2010, "Nespolo. Ipotesi Antologica" was held in Foligno, featuring approximately 40 historic works in the splendid rooms of the City Museum - Palazzo Trinci. Among others, the work "Il Museo" from 1975-76, 270x1000 cm (mp), is on display. In 2016, he joined Luca Desiata's "Corporate Art" Manifesto together with Alexander Ponomarev, Fernando De Filippi and other artists. Ugo Nespolo still lives and works in Turin.
