Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In his paintings, Ugo Rambaldi tends toward a highly abstract, almost informal vision of phenomenal reality. Landscape and the perceptible world in general are interpreted through a highly gestural painting technique that verges on Abstract Expressionism. Thus, we can appreciate how objects are depicted with vigorous, dense, and almost material brushstrokes. Volumes are virtually shattered into a complex, multi-colored, and faceted surface.
Ugo Rambaldi was a painter born in Spoleto in 1910 and died in Rome in 1985. He trained in Perugia and Bologna and, from a very young age, created frescoes in important churches (S. Antonio di Padova, S. Petronio, and S. Francesco in Bologna). In the early 1950s, he founded the Circolo Artistico di Spoleto, with which he organized important exhibitions. He later belonged to the Spoleto Six, along with De Gregorio, Raspi, Marignoli, Orsini, and Toscano. Rambaldi eventually distanced himself from the group, developing his own less informal painting style.
