Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings.

Artist Umberto Allemani specializes in cityscapes of his native Piedmont. His exquisitely figurative language is nourished by a precise recording of sensory data, in views rationally arranged according to a regular perspective grid of classical tradition. In short, Umberto Allemani's artistic practice is heir to vedutism, but he interprets this tradition with his own original vision. Indeed, as we can also see in this charcoal work, Allemani has a strong tendency toward a more immediate and impressionistic rendering of objects. For this reason, he employs a patchy application that ensures a remarkable freshness to the landscape, despite his monochrome style, imbuing the objects with strong atmospheric vibrations.
Umberto Allemani was born in Turin in 1932. A painter and graphic artist, he trained in his father's sculptor's workshop. Since 1956, he has held solo exhibitions in Turin, Carignano, Cuneo, Imperia, Moncalieri, Racconigi, San Benigno, and Savigliano, and has participated in over 800 group exhibitions and regional, national, and international competitions, winning approximately 400 awards. Among the most significant are those in the national competitions of Alba, Armataggia, Arona, Casale Monferrato, Cervinia, Cuneo, Manta, Mapello, Marina di Ravenna, Novara, Rome, Salsomaggiore, Saluzzo, Susa, Turin, Valenza, Vigonza, and Villanova.
