Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

The style of artist Umberto Bastia is significantly influenced by his training under Giorgio Morandi and Virgilio Guidi. Bastia achieves a pronounced synthesis of phenomenal reality, and does so through a very light application of color, using transparent and diluted layers. In this way, as in the views of Morandi or Guidi, everything is transfigured by light, which almost corrodes the material and forms, releasing the purest essence of things. An extremely lively essence, charged with vibrations that are not only atmospheric, but truly existential. This need for purity, which Umberto Bastia feels compelled to express through his artistic practice, also influences the composition of his works, always characterized by clean, essential lines and regular volumes. His palette leans toward intense hues that denote a more spiritual than naturalistic quality.

Umberto Bastia was born in Crevalcore in 1918. He trained at the Academy of Bologna under the guidance of Virgilio Guidi and Giorgio Morandi. He was a member of the Accademia di Merito dei 500 and the Academician Tiberino, as well as a member of the Union of the Golden Legion. He subsequently participated in exhibitions and competitions in Italy and abroad, earning significant recognition: the gold medal at the Castel Guelfo Group Exhibition in 1967, an honorary diploma at the Bormio extemporaneous exhibition in 1965, a gold medal at the Ravenna extemporaneous exhibitions in 1965 and 1966, and a silver medal at the Castel San Pietro exhibition in 1966. He died in 2004 in Crevalcore. Umberto Bastia passed away in 2004 in San Giovanni in Persiceto.
