Description of the work
Description of the work
Monochrome is a theme that runs through many currents of 20th-century and contemporary painting. It can be said that the monochromatic solution achieves an annulment of the opposition between background and figure, the latter understood as that which appears, that which, in monochrome, expands to the point of losing its mark, tending towards a progressive approximation and identification with the background, nullifying what is conventionally understood as pictorial activity. A voluntary and total renunciation of the image.
Umberto Mariani's painting style is often distinguished by the use of monochromatic surfaces and reliefs that evoke three-dimensionality. His studies focus on draperies, folds, and the perception of material. He tends to favor dark tones: black and gray to create a strong contrast of light and shadow; only in a few works does he introduce brighter colors.
Umberto Mariani was born in Milan in 1936. The experience of war left a deep imprint on the artist. In 1943-1944, his home in Milan served as a refuge for groups of persecuted Jews, protected and supported by the underground organization led by Fernanda Wittgens. He nevertheless managed to continue his art studies, later collaborating with his mentor on numerous frescoes, learning to work on large scales. His artistic career is rich in works and exhibitions, including solo shows dedicated to him, such as the 2016 one at Palazzo Bardini in Florence entitled: Mariani chez Capucci. In 2022, he participated in the Venice Biennale in the Cameroon pavilion with an installation titled "Non mi piego."
