Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The "seascape" in particular is a recurring theme among artists. First, for the lyricism implicit in views overlooking the sea or romantic images of small harbors. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to unleash their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations. In reality, this harbor view by Umberto Mariotti seems to have more than social connotations. The painter's intent is to depict a reality linked to work, rich in primary values.
The stylistic approach with which Umberto Mariotti depicted this subject has distinctly naive connotations. The naive artist is, by definition, self-taught, someone who hasn't attended an art school but has found inspiration within themselves. Stylistically, this translates into figurative painting that offers a simplified interpretation of reality, with infantile and unconsciously primitivist overtones. However, even the naive artist, in his spontaneity, possesses a self-awareness that leads him to develop a distinct aesthetic language, distinguishing it from amateurism. Indeed, in this view, inspired by the world of dockworkers and the daily grind of work, Umberto Mariotti seeks to reclaim a language imbued with essential primary values. For this reason, he adopts a simple and essential figurative style, which, in reality, finds its complexity in the artist's gesture, charged with existential vibrations.
Umberto Mariotti was an artist originally from Pistoia, born in 1905 and died in 1971. He trained in Pistoia and Florence. He made his debut in 1927, taking part in the Third Exhibition of the Tuscan Union of Drawing Arts; the following year, he participated in the First Provincial Art Exhibition of Pistoia. From that year on, he participated in all the provincial and interprovincial exhibitions of Pistoia and Florence, receiving numerous awards and recognitions, including the gold medal from the Municipality of Pistoia in 1957, from the President of the Republic in 1960, and from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in 1964. After the Second World War, he participated in the Venice Biennials in 1950 and the Rome Quadrennials in 1947 and 1955. He served as Director of the Pistoia School of Art for several years. He is also a member of the Academy of Drawing in Florence, as well as of the Accademia dei Cinquecento in Rome.
