Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the Lamentation over the Dead Christ has been popular since the 14th century. The scene depicts the lamentation over the body of Jesus after his deposition from the cross. The recurring characters in the works are the same as those mentioned in the Gospels: Mary, the apostle John, Mary Magdalene, and the pious women, Joseph of Arimathea, and Nicodemus. Each version varies in the number of characters, from the most crowded to the scene with only Jesus in Mary's arms, known as the Pietà.
The painter D'Angelo created a crowded scene in which the body of Christ appears in the center foreground, raised by a shroud. The pictorial language tends toward expressionism, with a highly refined formal synthesis. The entire crowd is constructed with energetic vertical brushstrokes, while the strip of sky in the background follows, for contrast, horizontal lines. The pictorial application is deliberately rough, sketching the subjects in a rough and forceful manner. The colors also rely on an aggressive, typically expressionist palette.
V. D'Angelo is an artist who has developed his own personal style based on a brutal formal synthesis. His models are, of course, the Expressionist avant-garde, in which his crude, synthetic figuration and excessive colors are recognized.
