Valentino Marra - Motherhood

The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.

In this lithograph, Valentino Marra temporarily abandons his explorations of pop icons to instead dedicate himself to a symbolic and meaningful image. The style, however, remains the same, distinctive of this painter. Marra begins with the image, enhancing its plastic qualities, highlighting the volume of an almost sculptural material. From here, the artist's colorful universe unfolds. The figure emits vibrations that translate into flowing colors that permeate the entire surface of the work.

Valentino Marra, painter and sculptor, was born in Martano in 1956. He has exhibited his work in numerous shows in Italy and abroad, achieving considerable public and critical acclaim. He has created several altarpieces, but his work is primarily associated with reproductions of female icons, which are included in numerous public and private collections.
