Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
The work is attributed to Valentino Vago. In this painting, however, his language takes on slightly different connotations than usual, which makes this work particularly interesting. Rather than the usual informal minimalism that pervades his subjects, in this female nude Vago achieves a remarkable synthesis of forms. The body is reduced to its essentials, stripped of its contingent data, and the painter seeks to distill the true existential meaning of this body. The plasticity, however, is enhanced by the pictorial material, creating a strong connection with concrete and tangible reality. The rest is all a pictorial vibration of remarkable expressive value. All this is possible thanks to Valentino Vago's refined technique in the modulation of color, in his ability to create a dynamic impasto, made of shifting and iridescent hues.
The work has been attributed to Valentino Vago, who appears to have had an early figurative and expressionist phase. Born in Barlassina (Milan) in 1931, he lives and works in Milan. After completing his studies at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, he exhibited at the VI Quadriennale d'Arte in Rome. In 1960, he held his first solo exhibition at the Salone Annunciata in Milan, presented by Guido Ballo. His notable exhibitions include participation in exhibitions organized by the São Paulo Biennale, the Kunstmuseum in Cologne, the Hayward Gallery in London, the Grand Palais in Paris, and museums in Frankfurt, Berlin, Hannover, and Vienna. Over the past fifteen years, he has also devoted himself consistently to mural painting, frescoing public and private spaces both in Italy and abroad.
