Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting is inspired by the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). In this case, we have a typical Byzantine-style interpretation.
Valeria Nicotra's tile paintings consciously draw on the Byzantine tradition, reworking it with a contemporary sensibility. Byzantine art retains all its strongly archaic stylistic features, aimed at exalting the supernatural and divine nature of what is depicted. For this reason, the painting exhibits a marked anti-naturalism, still reminiscent of the Middle Ages. The conception of space is non-rational; in the depiction, the subject has a hieratic stance and a superhuman fixity. The facial features are generalized, and the gaze of the large eyes is lost in contemplation of the divine. These are all elements that contribute to the work's transcendental aura.
Valeria Nicotra is an artist whose work is distinguished by a unique panel painting technique. Her work draws inspiration from Byzantine art, reinterpreted with modern expressionist overtones.
