Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and encompassed all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.
Valerio Trubbiani's talent for hyper-objective representations of figures, often animals, is recognized and well-established, both as a sculptor and an engraver. His language follows a meticulous description of the subject, which is depicted in all its detail, but the artist always adds his own surrealistic touch. Specifically, in this lithograph, Trubbiani's illustrative skill prevails, creating a captivating and engaging scene, meticulously crafted down to the last detail. Trubbiani's images seem to have been lifted from ancient bestiaries or are almost encyclopedia illustrations, designed to pique the viewer's interest.
Valeriano Trubbiani was born in Macerata in 1937. He is a sculptor and engraver, specializing in animal sculpture. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome but was also fascinated by his father's profession, a master blacksmith. In the 1950s, he began exhibiting as an expressionist and surrealist painter. In 1960, he returned to Macerata and began creating metal sculptures. He participated in the 1963 Biennale of Young Artists in Paris, the 1965 São Paulo Biennale in Brazil, and the 1966 Venice Biennale.
