Description of the work
Description of the work
Animal depictions in art have ancient origins, appearing even in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era. Valeriano Trubbiani's sculptural production is inspired by animal figures, in a highly creative reworking.
Valerio Trubbiani's talent for the hyper-objective representation of figures, often animals, is recognized and consolidated, both as a sculptor and an engraver. His language follows a meticulous description of the subject, which is depicted in all its details, but the artist always adds his own surrealist touch. Specifically, in this Reptile, the form itself is used as a means of expressing a powerfully symbolic and spiritual message; indeed, the entire surface of the sculpture is covered with a complex texture that establishes a dynamic compositional rhythm. Beyond the surrealist component, always present in Trubbiani's artistic practice, this particular sculpture also reveals a certain pop influence, in the ostentatious preciousness of the workmanship.
Valeriano Trubbiani was born in Macerata in 1937. He is a sculptor and engraver, specializing in animal sculpture. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome but was also fascinated by his father's profession, a master blacksmith. In the 1950s, he began exhibiting as an expressionist and surrealist painter. In 1960, he returned to Macerata and began creating metal sculptures. He participated in the 1963 Biennale of Young Artists in Paris, the 1965 São Paulo Biennale in Brazil, and the 1966 Venice Biennale.
