Description of the work
Description of the work
Valéry Escalar's artistic production is clearly the product of unconscious mental processes: dream interpretation, mental associations, and quotations. By triggering these mechanisms, the artist develops the sophisticated iconographies that emerge in his works. Due to their bizarre juxtapositions and the sense of alienation they convey, Valery Escalar's works can be classified within the broader family of Surrealist art, but they are distinguished by a more intellectual bent, veering toward the realm of so-called "Cultured Painting." In this case, the protagonist of the work is a lion, inserted into a completely alienating context, in which every law of space and time is subverted. The animal, in fact, moves among fanciful vegetation, whether suspended or not, in a highly ambiguous space.
When we talk about surrealism or citationism in painting, we always move within the realm of a figurative interpretation of the subject, even bordering on hyperrealism. Here too, the figurative structure is fully respected, with a stimulating narrative-descriptive vivacity. However, in this artwork, especially in the hand-applied color, we note a highly painterly touch on the part of Valery Escalar. The application of color is extremely fluid, giving the representation a highly dynamic and expressive flow. The sinuous rhythm of the colors follows that of the hatching that structures the entire composition, made of thin, curved black lines. As for the palette, the painter, as usual, chooses bright, luminous colors.
Valery Escalar, stage name Valeria Fiocchi, was born in Rome in 1932. Initially active in the music world as an opera singer, she later became a painter. She has received 360 awards, both for painting and graphics, and has participated in 110 solo exhibitions and 33 group exhibitions. Her works are held in the Vatican Pinacoteca, the Pontifical Seraficum Theological Faculty in Rome, the Italian Red Cross, the chapel of the Sant'Eugenio Hospital in Rome, the Regina Coeli Penitentiary, and the library of the Sacred Convent of Assisi. She has appeared on numerous television programs.
