Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with research into space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The work is a clear example of an expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with an almost brutal exercise in reduction. In this work, Antonio Vangelli pushes his expressionism to its limits. The landscape thus takes on an abstract connotation, almost completely losing touch with phenomenal reality and communicating the artist's inner gaze. The composition is constructed with Vangelli's usual threadlike stroke, but in this case the lines take on a more nervous and zigzagging nature. The dense brushwork creates the usual chromatic dissonances.
Antonio Vangelli was born in Rome in 1917 to a noble family, and passed away in 2004. He began creating his series "The Circus" and "The Masks," and published some drawings in the magazines "Lettere oggi" and "Risorgimento." He exhibited alongside Emilio Vedova and Giulio Turcato, and at the historic first exhibition of the Libera Associazione Arti Figurative, of which he was a member. The 1940s and 1950s marked a turning point in his art. He began painting geometric bridges and industrial landscapes. In 1999, the major solo exhibition "Antonio Vangelli. The Celebration of Life" was held at Villa San Carlo Borromeo. His works continue to be exhibited at the Museum of Villa San Carlo Borromeo, in the group exhibitions “The Portrait. The Artistic and Cultural Roots of Europe” (2005), “The School of Rome” (2006), “Women” (2006), “Beauty, Art, Writing. Europe, Russia, China, Japan” (2007) and “The Incarnation of Colour and the Writing of Light” (2007). His works are also exhibited at the large group exhibition “Treasures of Italy” (2007), held at the Chongqing Planning Exhibition Gallery, in Chongqing, China.
