Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is simultaneously charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. This work is part of Vanni Rinaldi's etchings. In this series, abstract and figurative blend almost seamlessly, and this painter's preferred subjects are highly sought-after, drawing on a citationism that draws on images from the past or from myth. In this specific case, this etching is inspired by the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, with a symbolic and existentialist interpretation of the moment in which the singer turns, transforming his beloved into a stone statue.
The composition of this engraving draws on an aesthetic conception that looks to our cultural roots, extracting from them fragments of identity, and assembling them in a different order, contextualized to the contemporary world. This work is exemplary of this phase of Vanni Rinaldi's work, built on a strong citational component that draws images from a virtual gallery nourished by the collective imagination (history and myth). Everything, however, is recontextualized by the juxtaposition of alienating, abstract, geometric, or figurative elements that recompose the story according to the artist's sensibility. For this reason, from a formal perspective, the quality is highly elaborate, drawing on diverse artistic sensibilities. While the figure of Orpheus has a decidedly existential connotation, with the double image of the black silhouette containing the character's inner self, Euridice is constructed with a synthetic, Matisse-like, and Expressionist graphic line that highlights its formal values. Above, another composition within a composition appears, constructed from symbolic elements (the stars and the written word) and other decorative elements. The two parts of the scene are joined by geometric lines.
Vanni Rinaldi was born in Soverato in 1937 and passed away in Rome in 2020. He trained in the capital and began his artistic career in the 1960s, not only as a painter, but also as an engraver and draftsman, debuting in 1968 at the VI Rome Art Biennale. His work has been the subject of the most refined criticism, which has recognized an artist with an irrepressible innovative streak while drawing his imagination from the great classical paradigms of myth, literature, poetry, and the highest expressions of Christianity. Among his most famous works are the cycle of one hundred paintings of the Divine Comedy at the Via Lucis (Sanctuary of Fatima, Portugal) and the Stations of the Cross (Church of San Nicola in Carcere, Rome). His works have been exhibited in the most important public and private galleries, in Italy and abroad.
