Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
Velia Simoncini's style presents a perfect fusion of realism and a delicate, impressionistic rendering of sensory details. On the one hand, the artist precisely describes her subjects, down to the last detail, with a strong sense of reality and the everyday, simple experience. On the other, her refined painting technique allows her to convey a sense of immediacy through rapid brushstrokes charged with atmospheric vibrations. Light thus reflects on objects, yet without interfering with the precise depiction of reality. All of Velia Simoncini's works are therefore characterized by a clear luminosity that is revealed, by contrast, in the play of shadows. This is also achieved through the use of a palette of soft, delicate colors.
Velia Simoncini was born in Porto Recanati in 1911 and passed away in 2003. Demonstrating a passion for art from an early age, she was self-taught. Only as an adult did she manage to attend painting schools in Macerata. She exhibited extensively in Italy and abroad, in cities such as Venice, Monte Carlo, Rome, Urbino, Washington, Paris, and Brera. She received important awards, including medals and gold plaques. She also received the Venice Biennale Trophy and the international Golden Lion award. She was named a Knight of the Republic.
