Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
This work is part of Velia Simoncini's most Expressionist phase. The landscape is rendered through a truly extreme process of synthesis. The elements of the view are created with a few brushstrokes, reducing everything to the essential. But what the landscape loses in naturalistic rendering of sensory details, it gains enormously in expressiveness. Indeed, the use of a palette knife technique, spreading highly textured color, imbues the work with an expressive force that derives from a direct connection between the artist's perception and her pictorial gesture. In keeping with the Expressionist nature of the representation, the colors are also strong, vibrant with the contrasts sought by the painter.
Velia Simoncini was born in Porto Recanati in 1911 and passed away in 2003. Demonstrating a passion for art from an early age, she was self-taught. Only as an adult did she manage to attend painting schools in Macerata. She exhibited extensively in Italy and abroad, in cities such as Venice, Monte Carlo, Rome, Urbino, Washington, Paris, and Brera. She received important awards, including medals and gold plaques. She also received the Venice Biennale Trophy and the international Golden Lion award. She was named a "Cavaliere della Repubblica" (Knight of the Republic).
