Description of the work
Description of the work
On the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi (1813-2013), the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia celebrates the event with a work of exceptional visual impact, containing a preface by Riccardo Muti and a presentation by Massimo Bray, Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism. The volume, edited by Alberto Melloni, is dedicated to the depths of Verdi the man, his work, and the impact he had on the most diverse levels of national and international culture and society. Images of his life and work are evoked through the places and works, in the climate that inspired them. And then the kaleidoscopic succession of emotional moments that capture the great vocal tradition of the entire twentieth century and which reach up to 2013, together with the most significant (and sometimes provocative) images of modern staging. An extraordinary volume with 350 images, accompanied by essays by the greatest Verdi experts, from Philip Gossett to Roger Parker, to Stefano Ragni, to name just a few. Furthermore, the work is enriched by the reprint of the entry on Giuseppe Verdi by Ildebrando Pizzetti, taken from the great Encyclopedia, and by the memorable lecture from 1951 in which the great musicologist Massimo Mila defines Verdi as 'the father' of the Italians. The reader will find traces of how Verdi offered himself for the first photograph, of how his theater was imprinted from watercolors to film shots, a unique way of measuring and representing the variety and depth of analysis necessary to understand Verdi from every perspective. This limited edition volume is large (29 x 33 cm) and printed in four colors with stochastic halftone on Scheufelen paper; 350 images, 840 pages in total. Bound in pit-tanned cowhide, the same material used for the slipcase.
