Description of the work
Description of the work
Along with a substantial body of work on religious subjects, sculptor Paolo Verginelli has also found inspiration in Greek mythology. In this case, the subject of the work draws inspiration from the Greek myth of Jason and the Argonauts. In this small relief sculpture, the artist depicts the ship on which the heroes accomplished their feat.
In addition to the refined iconography, the style of this work is also typical of Sergio Verginelli, with his complex sculptural language blending abstract and figurative. The surface of Verginelli's works is always complex and entirely occupied by the artist's creative act. The composition is based on a complex design that features a wide variety of lines. The volumes of the vessel are harmoniously arranged, rendered in a concise, expressionistic manner. The description of the concentrated space is highly dynamic and colorful. The entire composition, therefore, has an extremely vibrant and frenetic rhythm, a hallmark of Sergio Verginelli's sculptural practice. However, even within this great dynamism, the artist's expressive ability is such that the subject remains clear and highly communicative.
Sergio Verginelli is a Roman artist born in 1941, coming from a family of artists. After various experiences, Sergio Verginelli chose sculpture as his medium, beginning with a classical naturalism. He later explored more expressive forms. He has a long career behind him, featuring numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe.
