Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
We can see how in this work Veronica Montanino achieves a sort of union between the Poetics of the Object and the Informal. Indeed, the protagonist of the work is a simple dress, an everyday object, reproduced, however, in a hermetic manner, as is typical of this artist. The object is almost evoked in a negative, that is, formed by the gestural and material (therefore Informal) pictorial layering around it.
Veronica Montanino is a painter specializing in camouflage and remix techniques. She also excels in installations, especially in historic buildings. Her site-specific work at the Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo in Ascoli Piceno in 2006 was a celebrated work. In 2011, she participated in the 54th International Art Exhibition in Venice, at the Italian Pavilion at the Arsenale. Other notable projects in Rome include those at the MAMM, the Museum of the Other and Elsewhere in Metropolitz, and the 2013 exhibition at the Casa dell'architettura. In 2016, she had a solo exhibition at the Marca in Catanzaro.
