Description of the work
Description of the work
The work can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings. Within the artist Verter Ghidini's oeuvre, we also find these picturesque subjects, which express a curiosity for an exotic dimension, for ethnic and folkloristic everyday life. In this work, the exotic genre scene takes on an almost symbolist allure and complexity.
This work is characteristic of Verter Ghidini's style for this type of subject, in which a figurative representation resolves itself into a stylistic register with strongly expressionistic overtones. This is particularly evident in this work. Indeed, we can appreciate how the composition itself has a highly evocative feel, with the figures in the foreground occupying the space of the work, as if advancing toward the viewer. But above all, it is important how the entire representation of the scene has been executed by exploiting the expressive potential of color. The drawn structure resolves itself into a predominantly synthetic and swirling representation. The painted surface transforms into a shifting mixture of dynamic chromaticism made up of hues that are both warm and luminous, linked to the sensations of the exotic experience.
Verter Ghidini is an artist originally from Correggio. A versatile painter, he enjoyed a successful partnership for many years with Galleria Il Portone in Modena and with Normanno Gobbi, and his work ranges from figurative to informal. Ghidini studied at the Venturi Art Institute in Modena under Luigi Spazzapan. He taught Drawing and Art History at the middle schools of Rolo, Rio Saliceto, and San Martino, and has participated in numerous national exhibitions, always receiving unanimous public and critical acclaim.
