Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. This painting is a work of exquisite craftsmanship, in which Vincenzo Caprile demonstrates his remarkable technique, enabling him to achieve a completely naturalistic rendering of the subject and a detailed, precise physiognomy. The artist is completely faithful to an objective portrait, accurately capturing every detail, from the face to the clothing. Indeed, it can be said that his interpretation is decidedly realist. This means that the artist has no intention of idealizing the subject. The man's face and demeanor are depicted as they are, with his features and a completely casual pose. The artist is unafraid of the truthfulness of the depiction, even of its more unpleasant aspects, of a popular figure. The color palette focuses on warm, brown tones, contrasting with the neutral background, while the dynamic brushwork lends a fresh, fresh execution.

Vincenzo Caprile was born in Naples in 1856. From a wealthy family, he was able to devote himself to the study of painting from a very young age. He studied with Gabriele Smargiassi and Achille Carrillo at the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples, completing his training with Domenico Morelli. Thanks to his association with Alceste Campriani and Federico Rossano, he was able to approach the School of Resina, thus experimenting with the rendering of landscapes and nature from life. From 1873 until the late 1920s, he took part in the Neapolitan Promotrici, of which he was a member of the artistic jury and the permanent committee between 1890 and 1894, and vice-president in 1911. He made his debut at the 1973 Promotrice with the painting A Posillipo. He participated in national and international exhibitions, including those in Milan, Melbourne, Venice, Rome, Berlin, and others. In 1888, he became an honorary professor at the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples. He died in Naples on June 23, 1936.
