Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. In this painting, Vincenzo Domenico Barberio drew inspiration primarily from popular genre scenes set in rural settings.
In this work, with its realist undertones, Vincenzo Domenico Barberio's pictorial language is still distinguished by the prevalence of color over line, but, in keeping with the subject, by a synthetic approach that represents a reinterpretation of the Tuscan Macchiaioli tradition. We can especially appreciate how the use of light, always through the tonal values of color, is highly scenographic. As in Macchiaioli paintings, the light permeates the entire scene, clear and crisp.
Vincenzo Domenico Barberio was a Roman painter, born in 1925 and died in 1998. His artistic training was strongly influenced by the School of Via Cavour. For this reason, his artistic style always drew on an Expressionism rooted in the capital's landscapes. He was also a critic and writer.
