Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The work seems to reflect the artist's desire to create an expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with an almost brutal reduction, resulting in an abstract composition. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no regard for spatial depth; only the artist's marks hint at some intersection of planes. The brushstrokes delineate the forms in a very tormented and nervous manner. Color is used according to an emotional and spiritual interpretation, without any connection to reality.
Vincenzo Domenico Barberio was a Roman painter, born in 1925 and died in 1998. His artistic training was strongly influenced by the School of Via Cavour. For this reason, his artistic style always drew on an Expressionism rooted in the capital's landscapes. He was also a critic and writer.
