Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.
The painting is part of a series of works in which Vincenzo Maria Brunetti develops his own personal expressionist language. The subject's depiction is based on a remarkable synthesis of forms, which are abstracted through extremely rapid and darting brushstrokes. This pictorial style enhances the painter's gestural ability, which is expressed through the agitation of subtle strokes, but also through the strong emotion poured into the brushstrokes. Indeed, Brunetti, through a highly complex application of brushstrokes, creates a dynamic and ever-changing space. Also consistent with the strongly expressionist language of this work is the choice of a very strong and aggressive color palette, based on a predominance of red and fiery tones.
Vincenzo Maria Brunetti was born in Guagnano in 1950. He is a painter, sculptor, and architect. He trained at the Lecce School of Art, then in Turin and Milan. After various experiences, he returned to his hometown, where over the course of a decade he designed and built his immense, sumptuously decorated home. It is a hub of art and creativity known as "Vincent City."
