Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. A distinguished representative of the finest tradition of Neapolitan landscape painting, Vincenzo Somma favors views of Positano among his subjects.
In his landscape painting, Vincenzo Somma embraces a highly realistic vision of the view, yet with a profoundly lyrical interpretation, in keeping with the tradition of Neapolitan landscape painting from which this artist draws. On the one hand, Somma precisely describes the view in all its details, with a strong sense of the rural reality and the everyday life of a simple life. On the other, his refined pictorial technique allows him to convey a sense of immediacy to the canvas, thanks to rapid brushstrokes charged with atmospheric vibrations. Light thus reverberates on objects, yet without interfering with the precise description of reality. The entire view is thus characterized by a clear luminosity that is revealed, by contrast, in the play of shadows. The use of a palette of soft and delicate colors is also aimed at this purpose. Through this refined language, Vincenzo Somma is able to describe the colors of the houses perched on the coast and the light reflecting on the surface of the sea.
Vincenzo Somma was born in Naples in 1955, where he still lives and works today. He is an artist renowned for his romantic style and soft colors. Introduced to painting at a young age, he later attended the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown, where he perfected his painting techniques, giving his style the technicality that has made him a renowned and sought-after artist today. A lover of landscapes and the sea, he depicts them with unparalleled mastery on canvas, favoring a mix of oil and acrylic. His works are exhibited in numerous public and private collections, both Italian and international.
