Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
The subject is unique to Virgilio Guidi's work, who, along with his views of the Venice lagoon, also carried out extensive research on the female face. The painter's treatment of the subject remains characteristic. Guidi employs, even in his portraits, a remarkable process of synthesis that almost dissolves the objects into the predominant light, which in this case is the white of the paper. The face is outlined with a few graphic strokes that leave a very light and synthetic trace. The composition is then completed using a limited amount of color. The compositional balance is complete, achieved through the alternation of solids and voids.
Virgilio Guidi was born in Rome in 1891 and trained as a painter in the capital under Sartorio at the Academy of Fine Arts, and then Spadini. He later developed his own reflections on Giotto and Piero della Francesca. Guidi, however, owes his success to the city of Venice, whose lagoon views he immortalized in canvases that earned him the nickname "poet of light." Indeed, in his paintings, the sense of light is so strong that objects dissolve, creating compositions bordering on abstraction. Virgilio Guidi passed away in Venice in 1984.
