Virgilio Guzzi - The Telephone

Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

This drawing on paper is extremely interesting for appreciating how Virgilio Guzzi's pictorial language is profoundly influenced by Cubism. The subject is broken down, and its forms are arranged in multiple directions in space. For Guzzi, however, the breakdown, rather than being used as a means of investigating the object in space and time, takes on more of an expressionistic-psychological significance (as in Modigliani).

Virgilio Guzzi was born in Molfetta in 1902 and died in Rome in 1978. He was an important painter and exponent of the Roman School and was president of the Accademia di San Luca from 1974 to 1976. He was also a critic for the newspaper Il Tempo and a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts.
