Description of the work
Description of the work
This work was conceived in imitation of ancient altarpieces, which served the educational purpose of illustrating sacred stories and encouraging the faithful to meditate and pray. In this case, the work narrates the life of Jesus through 12 of the most significant episodes of his earthly life: the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Visit of the Magi, the Baptism, the Wedding at Cana, the Raising of Lazarus, the Last Supper, the Agony of Jesus, the Stations of the Cross, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, and Christ's Ascension into Heaven. The 12 panels were taken from the miniatures created for the Varia 124 Codex in the Royal Library of Turin, executed by Cristoforo De Predis in 1476.
The exquisite artisanal reproduction process employed in this work allows us to admire the exceptional quality of Cristoforo De Predis's miniature art in all its splendor. The twelve panels constitute an extraordinary example of fifteenth-century miniature painting, where the late Gothic tradition blends perfectly with Renaissance innovations. We can see how each scene is framed within a concrete, measurable perspective space, where all the subjects are placed in the correct proportions. At the same time, great attention is paid to naturalistic rendering and the expression of emotion. However, the Gothic tradition persists in the scenes' strongly narrative flow, creating an atmosphere somewhere between fairy tale and chronicle. The figures are elegantly elongated, and the bright colors and gold inserts are typical of the thirteenth- and fourteenth-century tradition, as well as inextricably linked to the creation of illuminated manuscripts.
The workshop that created this work respected and faithfully reproduced Cristoforo De Predis's work, employing a strictly artisanal process throughout every stage of the process. The print was hand-pressed with hot gold inlays. The frames, likewise, were crafted from fine wood and hand-gilded.
