Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this work is inspired by a conscious classicist citation. The artistic language draws inspiration from classical antiquity, both Greek and Roman, as well as its revival during the Renaissance. All this translates into an execution whose primary goal is mimesis, that is, the human need to imitate and reproduce nature, the world around us. Along with naturalistic rendering, the other fundamental concept, according to the parameters of Classicism, is the unity of the work of art, through a harmonious correspondence between all its parts.
The work shows us how Vito Pancella, in addition to being a distinguished sculptor, was also a refined engraver. Thematically, there is a connection between the two languages used by the Abruzzo artist: quotation and the revival of classicism. However, in a new contextualization that almost harks back to De Chirico's metaphysical gallery of images. Compositionally, the artist employs a highly evocative photographic approach. Finally, on a formal level, we can appreciate a high-level graphic technique: with fine hatching, Vito Pancella manages to give his subjects a sculptural volume. The plasticity is evident, especially in the complexity of the drapery.
Vito Pancella was an artist originally from Lanciano, where he was born in 1945. He passed away in 2005. He trained in Rome with Pericle Fazzini and Lino Bianchi Barriviera. He taught and had a studio in the capital for many years. In 1989, he returned to Lanciano, but continues to work between Verona and Pietrasanta. His forty-year career has spanned numerous exhibitions both in Italy and abroad, as well as awards and recognition.
