Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The "seascape" in particular is a recurring theme among artists. First, for the lyricism implicit in views overlooking the sea or in romantic images of small harbors. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to give free rein to their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations.
Vittorio Colucci's style follows the tradition of romantic and poetic Neapolitan landscape painting. The compositional structure of the work is based on a precise design that pursues an objective, naturalistic rendering of the view. The purity of form, however, is tempered by painterly effects and a harmonious color palette that casts a silvery moonlight across the entire scene. Light, therefore, takes on the starring role, measuring the vast expanse of the view and spreading its reflections across the water's surface. Thus, the landscape, despite its impeccable naturalistic rendering, is charged with vibrations that imbue it with a romantic, poetic aura.
Vittorio Colucci was born in Ischia in 1935. A nationally renowned painter, he received his first lessons from his father, Otello, also a painter. He subsequently trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. With a vast body of work, primarily landscapes and seascapes, he has participated in numerous national exhibitions, winning competitions and consistently receiving critical and public acclaim. His romantic landscapes are always distinguished by their use of light—cold, lunar, or golden, solar—which reverberates across the entire surface of the painting, generating precious and brilliant tonal textures.
