Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

The painter Vittorio Postiglione's style stands out in his distinctive cityscapes. They are always handled with a brushstroke and an almost calligraphic delicacy. Everything is based on color, within a substantially two-dimensional surface. The composition becomes a play of balance in the juxtaposition of different shapes and linear rhythms. The same play is repeated with the color, with each shape featuring a compact hue. What emerges is a fading skyline, almost an ephemeral vision of unreal volumes. In this work in particular, Postiglione achieves a tonal unity of orange that gives the sunset a symbolic connotation and reaffirms the mysterious, at times surreal, nature of the artist's work.

Vittorio Postiglione is a painter who devoted himself almost exclusively to urban landscapes, often inspired by the city of Rome, which he created with a highly personal style tending towards Expressionism.
