Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings.
The painter Vittorio Postiglione's style stands out in his distinctive city panoramas. They are always handled with a brush stroke and an almost calligraphic delicacy. Everything is based on color, on a substantially two-dimensional surface. The composition becomes a play of balance in the juxtaposition of different shapes and linear rhythms. The same play is repeated with the color, with each shape featuring a compact hue. What emerges is a fading skyline, almost an ephemeral vision of unreal volumes. In this view of Piazza Navona, we can see how particularly striking the contrast between the luminous white of the fountains and the darkness of the surrounding space is. This type of composition reaffirms the mysterious, at times surreal, nature of Vittorio Postiglione's work.
Vittorio Postiglione is a painter who devoted himself almost exclusively to urban landscapes, often inspired by the city of Rome, which he created in a highly personal style tending towards Expressionism.
