Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Wagner's interpretation of this landscape is, first and foremost, based on a rational organization of space. The painter creates a broad perspective view using the natural elements of the riverbanks as backdrops. The mountains in the background are lost in a bluish hue. The painter manages to alternate a solid outline with more pronounced painterly effects depending on the composition's needs. The entire scene is illuminated by a suggestive, cold light. The final result is a perfectly naturalistic rendering of the landscape, in which the painter, however, does not shy away from a more cursive technique that allows him to achieve a sense of freshness and immediacy.
The painter Wagner, in his interpretation of a landscape, seems to be an artist capable of modulating a more traditional conception of artistic creation, based on drawing and perspective, with pictorial effects that manage to enliven the composition.
