Walter Madoi - Vase of Flowers

Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.

In this vase of flowers, as in several of his other works, Madoi reaches the pinnacle of his expressionist poetics. The composition is entirely resolved in the foreground, with no emphasis on depth. The highly abstract subject has a synthetic character, its forms resolved with few painterly gestures. The rough, textured brushstrokes that form the vase of flowers are charged with expressionist qualities. Likewise, the highly incisive chromatic range is used by the painter to enhance the subject's existential vibrations and convey an emotion that underlies the entire painting.

Walter Madoi, 1925-1976, was a painter who left numerous works in the Parma area. He specialized in genre painting but especially in portraiture. His work reveals a strong influence from Expressionism, especially Northern European Expressionism, with its angularity and extreme synthesis. In other cases, however, he seems to reevaluate objectivity in favor of more natural portraits, yet always hollow and devoid of real weight. His research, in short, is always oriented towards exploring what lies beyond form, towards the true essence of the people portrayed.
