Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Wlodzimierz Zakrzewski's pictorial language can be confidently defined as post-Impressionist due to his ability to synthesize phenomenal reality through a cursive brushstroke that still strives for an immediate and refreshing representation of landscape. The rapidity of his touch reminds us of De Pisis, for example, but Zakrzewski's works are based on much thicker impastos that reveal a certain affinity with Utrillo or Van Gogh.
Wlodzimierz Zakrzewski was born in 1916 in St. Petersburg and died in 1992. He was a popular artist, especially in Poland; he trained in Warsaw and later taught Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts there. From the 1950s onwards, he devoted himself to landscape painting and exhibited his works in cities such as Warsaw, Paris, Dresden, Budapest, Milan, Rome, New York, and Munich. In Italy, he lived for a long time in Bergamo.
