Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.
This work is exemplary of Romeo Zanzi's production during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The artist begins with figuration, maintaining a firm connection to sensory reality. However, Zanzi applies a notable expressionist synthesis to his subjects. The figures are constructed essentially through color and are inserted into a complex space, marked by curved lines and angular cuts. The artist's linework is dense and textured, connoting the representation of existential vibrations. Regarding the palette, however, the works from this period generally present a deliberate contrast between the coldness of the backgrounds and the vivacity of the subjects.
Romeo Zanzi is an artist from Alfonsine, born in 1950. In 1975, he graduated in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, becoming a professor of Art History. From that moment on, he began his primary career as a teacher of Art and Art History. He first taught Art History at the "Don Bosco" High School in Faenza; he then moved to the "Margherita di Savoia" Teacher Training Institute in Ravenna as a teacher of Drawing and Art History. He then moved to the "A. Oriani" Middle School in Alfonsine, where, in addition to teaching Art Education, he served as Deputy Headmaster. He currently holds the chair of Art History at the "G. Ricci Curbastro" High School in Lugo.
