Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of this painting is part of the Vedutismo movement. Vedutismo is a genre born in the 18th century and developed primarily in Venice. Vedutismo painters aimed to represent a landscape objectively and scientifically, placing it as the protagonist of the work. There are basically two types of vedute: the realistic one, taken exactly from reality, and the "capriccio," a fanciful view invented by the painter.
Eugenio Bonivento's interpretation of the Venetian vedutista tradition is highly personal and updated with a contemporary sensibility. The framing, with its wide, scenic angle, is consistent with eighteenth-century vedute. It is rather in the pictorial interpretation that Bonivento reveals his own artistic influence, which is of Post-Impressionist origin. The forms are delineated in an extremely cursive manner, bordering on summary. A few brushstrokes create the shapes in a two-dimensional space, where depth is perceived only through the tonal values of the color. The entire work is coherent, attuned to a precise color palette that conveys a dense, humid atmosphere.
Eugenio Bonivento, also known as Zeno, was a painter born in Chioggia in 1880 and died in Milan in 1956. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and later studied with Guglielmo Ciardi, from whom he learned the poetic landscape style, rooted in the Venetian lagoon's view painting tradition. He participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale, and his paintings are held in numerous public and private collections.
