Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
This lithograph is an example of the work of Serbian artist Zivko Djak. His works are distinguished by their rationalistic interpretation of the human figure, usually engaged in physical exertion. Both the subject and the space in which it interacts are interpreted in a coldly objective manner, resulting in an elegant, dry, modernist aesthetic. The form is reduced in an absolutely functional manner, pursuing an essential, geometric aesthetic.
Zivko Đak was born in Belgrade in 1942 and passed away in Novi Sad in 2011. One of the most important Serbian artists of his time, he participated in numerous exhibitions, including international ones, dedicated to contemporary printmaking (Zagreb 1968, Vancouver 1968, Paris 1969, New York 1969, Tunis 1969). He achieved great success in Italy, receiving various awards. His work was first presented in 1970 at the Galleria dell'Incisione in Milan, followed by exhibitions at the Galleria d'Arte la Sfera in Modena and the Galerie Rive Gauche in Rome. He created illustrations for several literary works, including "La camera oscura" (The Dark Room), created by Roberto Sanesi in 1972.
